Lang Adds Another 1600 Twitter Followers in 6 Days

A week ago I started testing Chris Langs new Twitter Tool, which is part of his Google Friend Connect membership site: If you do not know Chris yet you better  should. The guy is the Top resource for Google social tools like Google Friend Connect, Reader, and YouTube. Here’s a great interview SEO legend Jack  Connecting-The-Dots Humphrey did with Chris last week on the Friday Traffic report !

So I checked Chris secret on increasing Twitter followers and I’m blown away by the results. Now see fo ryourself  what’s happened to my numbers in the last week:

My Twitter followers count has gone up from 2705 to over 4300 followers.

Except entering my name into the system and tweeting as usual I did nothing. Interesting to see the little break where my twitter followers growth count got stuck: I was not tweeting. So did not create attention…  Could be good proof of the quality this White-Hat SEO Software offers.

The biggest problem with the standard Twitter web application is that you have to keep an eagle eye on your replies and Direct Messages as you only see the main Tweetstream on the screen. It is also limited in that it only displays about the last 20 tweets, so if you want to see older ones, you have to keep going back pages. So what to do?

Easy, download Tweetdeck from http://www.tweetdeck.com The first thing you will probably notice is that you will need to change the settings as the default is white text on a black screen. Makes it hard to read I’ve found, but each to their own.

Tweetdeck is brilliant in that it displays the Tweetstream, your replies and your direct messages all on the one screen. The message columns allow for 500 tweets as a default, so scrolling down allows you to go back a fair way or search for tweets you may want to refer back to.

The screen has a continuous right hand scroll, so you can set up different groups and their tweets will appear in that column. You might have a group called best friends and another for gardeners for instance. That way you don’t miss important tweets from people who are more important to you than others. At the time of writing, Tweetdeck is probably the most widely used application for Twitter and I would highly recommend it to you.

Your Tweets

Start getting some tweets into the system now. On the Twitter home page, it asks What You Are Doing. Quite frankly many people don’t care until you have built a relationship with them as a result of following. But there are some good ways to get started. Follow some blogs that you are interested in via an RSS feed to a feed reader such as Google. (Search these on Google if you are not familiar with the terms. There is heaps of information on there and could occupy an ebook of its own.) Start by posting links to interesting posts on Twitter about them with a link to the blog post. For example: “Interesting post on pest control in tomatos. Link”. Make sure you always include http:// in the link and not just www so the link is clickable in the Tweetstream. If it’s a long link, Tweetdeck has a facility to shorten it to a small url.

Artists have always done strange things to win our attention, right? And lately, we’ve seen how musicians are using micro-blog site Twitter as an über-marketing tool. This weekend, one pair of artists took things further than we expected, as Erykah Badu and her beau, upstart rapper Jay Electronica, sent tweets of their daughter’s birth in real time.

The ever enigmatic Badu kick-started the experience, telling the more than 4,500 followers of her Twitter blog, “Fatbellybella“: “Morning, I’m in labor.”

The Grammy-winning singer gave updates on the time between her contractions before going AWOL. Presumably Badu was, you know, giving birth when she disappeared. But Electronica kept sending updates throughout the birth on his page, @JayElectronica.

Schedule two Twitter times per day – once in the morning and once in the evening – and then stick to it. Your Twitter buddies can survive without knowing your entire itinerary for the day.

2. Decide the purpose for your visit before getting on Twitter. Are you sending a tweet about your latest blog post? Are you trying to find local business people to network with? Deciding what you want to do before you log on is a big time saver.

3. Jot down notes during the day for your Twitter time. It doesn’t have to be anything long or fancy. A sticky note will do. Just keep track of your thoughts so when you get on Twitter you can accomplish what you want and then leave the site.

4. Do not tweet about every single thing you do. No one cares if you are going to the store. They don’t agonize over the fact that your hamster ate too much. Keep your tweets limited to important stuff.

If you take control of your Twitter time, you can take control of how well it works for you. Be strong.
